Ignore the notifications tab at your peril... A buzzing comments section is social strategy gold. It boosts engagement, reach and brand visibility all while building a valuable audience connection.

But those thriving online communities don’t happen by accident, they’re powered by smart, consistent community management.

Actually, social media isn’t really about posting anymore, it’s about participation. Audiences want brands to feel human and responsive. In fact, a quick response or a funny reply full of pizzazz can have more impact than the original post.

Done well, social community management builds trust, increases visibility and turns passive followers into active fans. From platform-specific tone of voice to creating natural back-and-forth conversations, our Social Media Manager and Team Leader, Sophie Hawes, shares her golden rules on building an active social community and why you should never post and ghost…

  1. Mirror the tone of the commenter and the social platform

Always match the energy of the person you’re replying to.

If it's a formal comment, make it a more polished response. Friendly, emoji-heavy comments can be matched with a warm, casual reply. Keep in mind and adapt to the different platforms you're working on too. Facebook audiences often expect informative, helpful and less casual replies, whereas TikTok and Instagram reward personality, humour and internet language.

  1. Keep the conversation going

When replying to comments or questions, it's always good to ask questions back, invite people's opinions, and prompt more interaction to keep the convo going.

People love feeling noticed online, and getting a reply from a brand can start to build a personal relationship and make them feel seen. For example, we find people get excited when 'Bluewater' replies to them and will write additional comments such as: "Omg I can't believe Bluewater replied'

  1. Be active outside your own page

Engage with related brands and business in the local area, as well as creators, collaborators, and community pages. Like, comment, and engage outside of things directly related to your brand. This can help build brand visibility and make you genuinely involved in the community rather than just posting content. You want to engage as a 'real person' not a faceless brand.

  1. Reply quickly, especially to positive comments

Fast engagement boosts visibility and makes followers feel heard. People are probably much more likely to comment again if they get a response quickly. Early interaction is also often rewarded in the algorithm.

  1. Be trustworthy and consistent

It is important that audiences trust the brand, so replying with accuracy is key.

Keeping messaging constant and responses in line with the brand's tone of voice will let audience know they can trust and rely on what you're saying, and can come back to you again and again.
